My regular readers know I spend a fair amount of time at the family lake house in east Texas. (You can read about Winnsboro here and Clara Ida Frances here.) Imagine my delight when my mom asked if I was in the mood for crepes on Friday! (The answer to that question by the way is, Always.) A new store with a bistro inside opened up in the recently revitalized downtown Mount Vernon.
ML Edwards and Co feels completely on trend and very Joanna Gaines inside with its rustic chic aesthetic, oversized farmhouse tables, and floral touches. I resisted the urge not to run around shopping as we sat down to lunch at Bistro 1916, located on Mount Vernon’s historic square.
A fabulous addition to east Texas, Bistro 1916’s menu has swimsuit-friendly options and heartier fare. I settled on a combination of both (as I often do): the Bistro 1916 Salad, which combines pasta with a salad. The pasta is pan seared, giving it a bit of crunch and body, adding texture to the salad . We also tried the sundried tomato and basil hummus with naan bread and split a lemon blueberry crepe.
That crepe though! Filled with a lemon cloud, dripping in blueberry sauce, this is not to be missed. I don’t care how full you are. Burn it off on a wakeboard later. It’s a must!
If you’re too full immediately following lunch, you can actually stroll around the shop in between courses. I’m having anti-buyers remorse, meaning I’m regretting not purchasing everything on the front table.
Just look at that runner! I actually have a hard time finding floral prints that I love and this is so fresh and spring-y. What was I thinking leaving this table runner and the napkins in the store? I don’t know who styled this table but it looks like something out of a glossy magazine.
In addition to my exact taste in home goods, there’s a fair amount of wine, chocolate, oils, and other fun pantry items.
After lunch, take a stroll around downtown Mount Vernon. It’s adorable! Be sure and take a photo with the tallest man in the Civil War. There’s also a new coffee shop that my mom tells me looks like something out of Tombstone.
