Too good not to share! Here's the story of how a stranger at DFW Airport became a dear friend and ended up at my Cinderella Ball. ✨I have to tell you guys a story. 💫 Grab some coffee and a snack because it’s a long one! I’ve been waiting nearly four years to tell you this. Once upon a time my mom tried to fly to Chicago to visit family. My dad dropped her off at the airport for an early flight and went to work. Her full American Airlines flight was cancelled due to a tornado in Chicago and she tried to get on the next flight to no avail. “Quick! The next flight boards in ten minutes but if you run, you can make it,” said the gal behind the counter at DFW Airport. So my mom dashed through the airport, changed terminals, and made it in time only to discover that the flight was full. “If you hurry, you might be able to catch the next flight!” a different girl behind a different counter told her. So my mom ran through the airport, sans her luggage, which was already on its way to Chicago, but alas, that flight was also full with people from her original flight trying to get to Chicago. This went on for a couple of hours without a moment for her to even grab a muffin. She walked up listlessly to her sixth counter or so where a raven-haired beauty had tears in her eyes. Meet Lizet. Lizet had never been on a flight before and was en route from Sacramento to Chicago to see her cousin when her fight to Chicago was cancelled during a layover in Dallas. She was distraught. I can’t even imagine having never been in an airport before and being by yourself trying to navigate DFW Airport, which is enormous! She was at her wit’s end when she met my mom, who immediately adopted her for the day. I finally call my mom at 1 pm. (This saga began at 6:30 am.) “Mom, I’m coming to get you. This is ridiculous. You’re not making it to Chicago today. You’ve been at this for hours. You need a sandwich,” I said. To which she replied, “I can’t leave Liz.” “...who on earth is Liz?” I asked. “She reminds me so much of you and the poor thing has never been on an airplane before and she was on my flight that got cancelled. She’s not even from here. She’s from California. She was on a layover. We’ve been together all day. I can’t just leave her here.” “Okay,” I said. “Ask Liz if she has any food allergies. I’m making up the guest room now. I’m coming to get you both and I’ll cook you a good dinner and I’ll take you to the airport tomorrow to try again.” My mom relays this information to Liz, who stares at her dumbstruck before saying, “Wow. It’s true what they about Texans!” I got in my car and drove to the airport. As I’m pulling up, my mom tells me all excitedly that they were able to get on a flight! So I turn around and drive 40 minutes back to my house. When I’m about to exit, my mom calls me again. Liz made it but she didn’t. I exit and loop around and drive back to the airport. My phone rings. “You’re not going to believe this but I GOT ON A FLIGHT! I’m so sorry you drove back again!” Not a problem, I told her as I exited and started driving back to my house. My mom calls me again twenty minutes later. She was shaken. “They thought I had a seat! I was on the plane! I was looking at the seat! The guy was in the bathroom it turns out. They escorted me off the plane.” “This is insane,” I said as I turn my car around. “It’s after 4 pm. Have you eaten at all today?”“No,” she said quietly. “I’ll be there soon!” I am just about to the airport when my phone rings. “YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS BUT I’M REALLY ON A FLIGHT! I’m so sorry you drove back and forth all day!” She sounded so excited. I looped the airport again and exited immediately. I ordered two caramel frappuccinos at a Starbucks and sat in the parking lot and waited. Ten minutes later my poor mama called me, half crying, half laughing. Mostly crying though. Needless to say, she did not make it on that flight. I told her to walk to the exit. I met her there minutes later. “How did you get here so fast?” she asked before spotting two Frappuccinos. “I just knew in my bones you weren’t going to Chicago today.” It was now 5:30 pm. She hadn’t eaten all day and wasn’t about to ask me to drive her across the metroplex to her house through rush hour so we drove back towards my house, stopping immediately for dinner and at a mall to get her clothes for the night and the next day since she didn’t have her luggage. We were eating ice cream later that night when her phone lit up with a notification. She stared at it a moment, confused, and then a smile lit up her whole face. “OMG! Lizet friended me! The girl from the airport!” “Ooh, let me see! Let me see! Holy moly, she looks like a movie star,” I said as my phone lit up. “OMG! She friended me too!” Liz was so touched that two strangers from Texas cared so much about getting her to Chicago that she found us both in Facebook. That was 3.5 years ago and we’ve been pen pals ever since. She’s followed The Rose Table and my Disney Dinners since the beginning so on a whim, I invited her to my Cinderella Ball. She asked my mom if she could stay with her. She bought a plane ticket to Dallas within one hour of receiving the invitation. Here’s me with my mom and Liz at my Cinderella Ball last weekend. You never know who you’re going to meet or what great friendships can come out of such bad days.
