Disney Dinners: FROZEN

Elegant Frozen Party: a Norwegian menu served in a winter wonderland, because the cold never bothered me anyway

Hosting a Frozen party? You’ve come to the right place! Welcome to my Disney Dinners series. I’m hosting a different Disney-themed dinner party every month and am kicking things off with the 2013 phenomenon Frozen. It’s such an atmospheric film that I thought I could have some real fun with as a party theme!

Inspiration

The fictional town of Arendale was inspired by Norway so I came up with a Disney Frozen party menu that celebrates the gorgeous country and has a little Disney magic sprinkled on top. (Quite literally.) Here’s how I hosted my Frozen dinner party, recipes and all!

The Ambiance

My goal for Frozen was to hear gasps when my friends walked through the front door. Before I even opened the door, my guests could smell the peppermint and spruce candles I had burning inside to make the house smell like winter. The dining room was completely transformed into a winter wonderland in two easy steps: I replaced my chandelier lights with blue bulbs (you can find them on Amazon) and used an indoor snow light machine to project falling snow over the scene. The combination looked so very Frozen that my dad cheered when we plugged it in the week before the party. It was so beautiful that my clever Cavalier King Charles Spaniel kept turning on the snow machine while I was gone. I kept coming home to find her gazing into the dining room!

I also swapped out the main picture in my dining room. My regular readers know that my dining room is French themed and I usually have a print of the sun setting over the Eiffel tower hanging in the center of the back wall. The orange colors detracted from Frozen so I borrowed my parents’ sleigh print for a snowy scene. Don’t be afraid to swap out art for themed parties! It makes a big difference.

The Table

I chose an ice blue tablecloth and delightful light up snowflake runner from Pier 1 for my Frozen table. It’s a bit short for my six-foot-long dining room table but I bunched it up to make it work. No placemats were necessary as I used a table pad under my table cloth for heat protection. I also notably did not use any candles because I didn’t want to detract from the enchanting table runner.

The Flowers

I knew I wanted to use white flowers for this – because any other color would detract from the look – but when I was looking at my options, none of them felt magical enough. So I bought flower-safe silver glitter spray paint and jazzed up white FLOWERS. I used fabulous birch tree vases that my mom insisted I buy last year. Think of how often you’ll use them! she had said. Thanks, Mom! She was right, per usual. I use them all winter long. To recreate this at your house, I suggest clear or blue vases or you could use silver spray paint on washed and dried pickle jars.

The Place Settings

I did not use my usual plates because they’re off-white. I instead used my white china plates with silver trim paired with white napkins tucked into giant snowflake napkin holders. I had a champagne glass and water glass at each place. I wanted a pretty minimal table so as to not distract from the falling snow all around us.

The Music

I wish I could tell you that I bought fancy Norwegian music for this party but I did not. I opted for a classy Disney jazz CD I picked up at Whole Foods months ago. I listen to it obsessively in my car before work every day.

The Fashion

I am going to attempt Disney bounding at all of my Disney Dinners. If you’ve never heard of Disney bounding, it’s basically dressing as a modern-day character. You’re not in costume, but your outfit could easily be recognized by Disney fans as a certain character. I wore my white cape dress from a previous event, statement white necklace, and silver stiletto heels. I mimicked Elsa’s makeup with purple eye shadow, strong black eyeliner, and a pink lip. My hair stylist Sara Munson also worked her magic to give me an Elsa braid to complete the look!

My friend Candy really brought her Disney bounding A-game! She wore an ice blue lace cocktail dress, large snowflake ring, and sparkly tiara. Tres Frozen!

The Drinks

This was a fun one that’s hardly a recipe! I dropped blue rock candy into champagne flutes and just like magic, we were drinking icy blue champagne.

I also served Gnarly Head pinot noir with the pork – daring, I know! I had never had red wine with pork before but loved how it complemented the mustard sauce.

The Food

Now for the most important part of a Disney Frozen party, the food! I did tons of research on Norwegian cuisine to come up with this menu.

Frozen Menu:

Smoked Salmon Crostini
Svinestek (Roasted Pork Tenderloin) with Mustard Sauce
served with Garlic and Gruyere Smashed Potatoes, Roasted Carrots
The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway Hot Fudge Sundaes

Smoked Salmon Crostini

Did you know that smoked salmon is huge in Norway? Me either! It turns out, Norwegians happily eat smoked salmon morning, noon, and night. That’s my kind of country! I decided to serve Norwegian-style smoked salmon on toasted baguettes as a play on the line, We finish each other’s sandwiches. It’s a quick and easy appetizer! Get the recipe here.

Svinestek (Roasted Pork Tenderloin)

Pork tenderloin is a popular dinner in Norway and also happens to be a great way to feed a crowd. I paired it with a warm mustard sauce. Get the recipe here. Get the recipe for the sauce here.

Garlic and Gruyere Smashed Potatoes

I knew I wanted to serve potatoes at Frozen because potatoes are commonplace on Norwegian tables and as a half-German, half-Irish woman, I’ve never met an amount of potatoes that I cannot polish off. I went rogue and decided to make smashed potatoes, which I had never made prior to testing these for Frozen because I’m incredibly stubborn and got it in my head that a flat potato could be turned into a Hidden Mickey on the plate. For that reason, my guests were served exactly three smashed potatoes each. Get the recipe here.

Roasted Rainbow Carrots

This is a nod to Olaf…and kind of Sven, I suppose, since the reindeer is a huge fan of carrots. Get the recipe here.

“What is that amazing smell? Chocolate!”

The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway Sundae

I stewed and stewed and stewed over what dessert to make for Frozen. I decided on homemade hot fudge because some desserts are worth melting for! I topped the sundae with amaretto whipped cream and slivered almonds as an homage to the tremendously popular almond cake of Norway plus Ice Queen sprinkles. The dessert is finished with a white chocolate snowflake to give the sundae an extra dose of Disney magic. Get the recipe here.

I have to say, for the first time in forever every guest finished every bite of dinner. When do you ever see it? I was mid sentence when I looked around and realized that there was not one bite of food left behind. That’s how you know dinner was a hit!
