These super soft doughnuts pack a ton of dark chocolate flavor
I tested so many chocolate doughnut recipes before settling on this one. It’s light and fluffy with a deep, dark chocolate flavor. These are baked, not fried, so they’re much healthier than your average doughnut and super moist from the buttermilk.
Little known fact: virtually every recipe on The Rose Table is dark chocolate because I only buy dark cocoa powder. (Hershey’s Special Dark, to be exact.) It makes a huge difference in baking. Milk chocolate lovers, feel free to sub out regular cocoa powder but dark chocolate lovers, I got you.
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to throw together. I can literally whisk these together before my coffee finishes brewing. You just need one medium sized bowl, a whisk, and a wooden spoon. I love old school recipes like that!
If you don’t want to make the frosting, feel free to enjoy these plain or toss in cinnamon sugar when they’re warm from the oven. Yum!
I know I will make these again and again. I hope you love them as much as I do, and as much as my guests did at Disney Dinners: Cars, where I served these on top of my Amaretto Milkshakes. It quite the show-stopping dessert!

Dark Chocolate Doughnuts
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 granulated sugar
1/4 cup Hershey’s Special Dark Cocoa Powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 large egg
1 cup low-fat buttermilk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
For the frosting:
3 Tbsp butter
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 Tbsp light corn syrup
Sprinkles, if desired
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease two doughnut pans.
- Whisk together dry ingredients.
- Add egg, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla and stir until combined.
- Spoon batter evenly into prepared doughnut pans.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until doughnuts spring back when lightly touched.
- Cool in the pan for five minutes.
- Use a small spatula to gently pop doughnut out of pan. Cool completely.
- To make the frosting, melt butter over low heat and whisk in chocolate chips and corn syrup until smooth and glossy. Let cool slight and spread on doughnuts. Top with sprinkles if desired.
