Disney Dinners: Maleficent Mistress of Evil

Maleficent party ideas with a whimsical menu set in The Moors

Maleficent is hands down one of the greatest classic Disney villains and I absolutely love that the live action films made her a hero. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was released on the sixty year anniversary of the Disney classic Sleeping Beauty. We get a proposal, Michelle Pfeiffer, and we dive more into the fae species as well as learn about their weakness.

Get ready because we’re heading into The Moors for one of the most whimsical dinners to date. Here’s how I hosted Disney Dinners: Maleficent Mistress of Evil, recipes and all!

The Rose Table Disney Dinners: Maleficent Mistress of Evil is sponsored by Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, out on DVD and blu-ray January 14, 2020.

The Ambiance

Maleficent is from a beautiful, colorful, enchanted forest called The Moors and that was inspiration for the dining room. I swapped out my main dining room painting for a forest canvas print to set the scene for The Moors. I filled the room  with purple flowers that smell amazing, adding to the ambiance, and I fixed my very own raven (for Diavol, of course) atop a pewter lantern, that I thought was a nice nod to the castle. I hung black wings on top of my dining room doorway because when I think live action Maleficent, I think wings.

The Table

I styled the table with a forest green leaf tablecloth, fabulous new tree candle holders, pinecones from the yard, and cute little mushrooms that you might recognize from Disney Dinners: Snow White. This is one of my favorite tables to date. I love the outdoors so much that I could absolutely have a dining room that brings the outdoors in year round!

The Flowers

I did something a little different with the flowers, something I used to do in my early twenties when I’d cut roses in the garden (I grew thirty varieties at my first house!) and bring rogue stems indoors. I thought the look of flowers sporadically around the table would give the dining room a forest feel. I also styled a large bouquet of purple hydrangeas, purple stock, burgundy chrysanthemums, and eucalyptus on the side table and a vase of overflow flowers set on top of my china cabinet. The eucalyptus was so fragrant. The dining room smelled wonderful!

The Place Settings

I styled each place with the wood chargers my dad made several parties ago. These are actually real wood slices from a forest in my town that my dad turned into chargers. Atop the wood slices, I set my Emma plates from Pottery Barn with a Maleficent horn sticker on top as a fun take-home gift for my guests and purple satin napkins tucked in between the plates. I used my branch forks and had a floral place card for everyone sticking out of a tiny wood place card holder.

The Fashion

For my Maleficent Disney Bounding, I chose a one-shouldered black dress with ruffles. The ruffles made me think of Maleficent’s wings.

My friends looked so nice! Cathryn Disney Bounded as Queen Ingrith and Ian looked Maleficent dinner party perfect in his purple and black velvet ensemble.

The Drink

I served a mixed berry iced tea at Disney Dinners: Maleficent. The blueberry mint iced tea from Disney Dinners: Mary Poppins Returns is one of the most re-pinned recipes on The Rose Table so I thought you guys might like another version of that fan-favorite drink! I garnished the drink with lavender, which felt appropriate for The Moors and Maleficent, since lavender is soothing and Maleficent is of course based on Sleeping Beauty. Get it? The Food

I did something a little different with the Maleficent Mistress of Evil Menu. I wanted the food to tell the story of the movie. We begin with classic Maleficent horns, then our main course gets “bombed” with cheese like Maleficent gets bombed in the climax, and finally we end with Winged Creature Cheesecake just like the movie does. I’m not going to tell you what kind of wings we end with though – you’ll have to get the DVD and watch the movie to find out!

Maleficent Horns

Does it get more whimsical that eating actual Maleficent horns? We have so many fairies in Mistress of Evil, this seemed like a fitting dish. I transformed my Disney Dinners: Cars bread cone recipe into horns by tinting the dough black and forming little horns out of each one. They’re fun to make and even more fun to eat! These hollow cones can be filled with anything you’d like but I highly recommend them with my Bacon Spinach Dip. Get the recipe for Maleficent Horns here.

Baked Mushroom Pasta (with parmesan”bombs”)

Baked Mushroom Pasta

I wanted an earthy vegetable main course. Why vegetarian? In a castle dinner party scene with Queen Ingrith in Mistress of Evil, Maleficent doesn’t want to eat the bird that’s served. This 9×13 dish will feed a crowd. To make it extra whimsical, I served this dish with red parmesan “bombs” so my guests could bomb their pasta with cheese just like Maleficent and the fae are bombed in Mistress of Evil. Get the recipe here.

Winged Creature Cheesecake

I came up with this equally whimsical dessert to pay tribute to our favorite winged creature. I baked mini black cherry cheesecakes as a nod to the original Sleeping Beauty story, made famous by The Brothers Grimm in Germany, where black cherry is a popular flavor. The wings were not difficult to make. I used a silicon mold and melting wafers. They can be made weeks – even months! – in advance so you can impress your guests with little stress.
