Black Halloween Martini, How to Use Dry Ice Safely in Drinks

A jet black martini with spooky smoke

Looking for a spooky Halloween cocktail? You’ve come to the right place! This witchy drink gets its magic from dry ice and its color from the perfect combo of ingredients.

There is no food coloring in this drink. The combination of blue curaçao, red cranberry juice, and dark Chambord (raspberry liquor) make the perfect black martini. It’s honestly spooky without the dry ice too!

Before using dry ice I highly recommend reading my How to Safely Use Dry Ice in Drinks article. The gist is: you don’t want to consume or touch dry ice but it IS safe to use in drinks because it completely evaporates into a gas form, leaving no dry ice left in your drink after about five to ten minutes. To be extra cautious, wait until the drink stops smoking before drinking it. You’ll be left with an extremely chilled drink (so arctic in fact that the glass will be frosted!) and no dry ice left to accidentally consume.

You can use vodka if you prefer but what can I say? I’m a rum girl and I always have some in my home bar.

All Hallow’s Eve Martini

1.5 oz white rum (or vodka)
3/4 oz blue curaçao
3/4 oz Chambord
1/2 oz simple syrup
Dash bitters
1.5 oz cranberry juice
1 two inch chunk of dry ice

  1. Measure ingredients in a martini glass. There’s no need to shake it with ice since the dry ice will chill the drink for you. Ooh and ahh as the drink turns black and give it a little stir, then use tongs to add a chunk of ice. You’ve got about five minutes of fabulous smoke, then it’s ready to drink!

Great question! It depends on the size of the chunk of ice but for a 1.5-2” piece of dry ice like I used here, you’ve got about five minutes of epic smoke. It’ll bubble for up to ten.
