For Disney Dinners: Cinderella, I wanted to serve the dessert with a clock on the plate. I ordered a clock stencil and tested cocoa powder and I’m delighted to report that it worked beautifully! I will be using this trick for many New Year’s Eve parties to come.

This is one of those things that I tested thinking, There’s no way this will work! and was thrilled when it did. Not only did it work, it worked incredibly well. I worried that the cocoa powder would blow everywhere and wouldn’t make it to the table BUT I actually held a plate sideways and shook it in this video and the cocoa powder stayed up:

You really don’t get sturdier than that! It turns out, cocoa powder is considerably heavier than, say, powdered sugar, and I had nothing to worry about. Here’s how to do it.

Cocoa Powder Clocks

Clock stencil
Cocoa powder
Small sieve

1. Set clock stencil in the center of a dessert plate.
2. Spoon cocoa powder into a small sieve. Hover sieve about 8″ or so above the dessert plate and gently tap the sieve to sprinkle cocoa powder over the stencil. Go around the outer edges in a circle to get every number. Once around is plenty – too little cocoa powder looks better than too much!
3. Gently lift up the stencil and voila, a cocoa powder clock! Perfect for serving a New Year’s Eve or Cinderella dessert.
