White Cheddar Cheese Sauce

White Cheddar Cheese Sauce

Looking for the perfect White Cheddar Cheese Sauce? You found it! This EASY recipe takes five minutes to make and is perfect for football season, game night, and so much more.

Fun fact: my original Cheese Sauce is the #1 recipe on The Rose Table so I decided it’s time to do some variations. Here I’ve used Tillamook white cheddar, which melts like a DREAM.

It’s important to grate your own cheese. Do not use pre-grated cheese. The coating that keeps it from clumping together also means it’s not great for a cheese sauce. For the creamiest, dreamiest cheese sauce, you’ll want to grate a block of white cheddar.

I particularly love serving this with pretzel bites or bread, apples, and celery.

White Cheddar Cheese Sauce

2 Tbsp unsalted butter
2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup whole milk (or 3/4 cup 1-2% milk and 1/4 cup cream)
8 oz white cheddar cheese
1/4 tsp salt
For serving: pretzels, apples, celery.

  1. Grate cheese. You should have two cups of grated white cheddar. You don’t want to use pre-grated cheese if you want a really creamy dip. The pre-grated stuff doesn’t melt as nicely.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in flour and cook for two minutes, until bubbling. Turn heat up and whisk in milk. Bring to a simmer, then remove from heat and slowly whisk in cheese, handful by handful, until fully incorporated. Whisk in salt and serve immediately.

Stay cheesy,
