There’s just something about the Texas hill country that screams dinner al fresco. It was a perfect fall evening when my friend Kat and I headed to Cabernet Grill for dinner. I can always trust her opinion when it comes to a restaurant reservation!


The Ambiance
I’m a sucker for a good patio and Cabernet Grill has truly special outdoor space. The grounds are upscale Texas chic, perfect for both out-of-towners and locals. A waterfall cascades right next to the intimate patio, which is shaded by a sun screen and large trees. We had a cozy table with a peek-a-boo sunset view, an enchanting spot for our first dinner in the hill country!


The Food
I was immediately excited when our server brought out complimentary roasted carrot soup with pumpkin seeds for us to sip an amuse bouche. Is there anything classier? The soup was delicious and is available in a cup or bowl, but we opted for the bruschetta board, which came with fabulous grilled bread and three toppings: white bean spread, olive tapenade, and a classic tomato basil bruschetta topping.


For dinner we both ordered the pecan crusted crab and shrimp cakes, which came with a corn salad, roasted poblano mayo, and your choice of appetizer. I went with classic garlic mashed potatoes to round out the meal. We also split a bottle of local rosé by Ron Yates, a vineyard that all of my hill country friends have recommended.


Last but not least we went with the seasonal crème brûlée: cinnamon maple. Yum! This was a light but cozy way to end the meal. Much to our delight, we were also given some complimentary chocolates. In a day when so many offer less, it’s refreshing to see that Cabernet Grill is going above and beyond.


Cabernet Grill is located just south of historic Fredericksburg near Augusta Vin and Invention Vineyards. If you love a well-crafted menu, exemplary service, and dinner with a view, you’ve got to try Cabernet Grill!
