Isn't It Romantic Review | The Rose Table

Thank you to Warner Brothers Entertainment for inviting me to screen this film!

I got to preview the comedy Isn’t It Romantic tonight at the Dallas screening. I expected to like it because I adore Rebel Wilson but I did not expect the entire theater to guffaw during the entire 88-minute run. It’s hysterical! The movie centers around an architect who doesn’t seem to notice that she’s in love with her best friend and co-worker (the always charming Adam Devine) until she hits her head and wakes up in a rom-com version of her life. The movie both pokes fun at rom coms and at the same time, is a satisfying one in and of itself.

The film is a visual feast of all things pretty. Nearly ever frame is filled with overdone rom com stereotypes – flowers, ballgowns, ice cream (aka, a regular day here at the Rose Table!) – but it’s all presented in a way that would make Monty Python and the Holy Grail fans giggle. It’s in on the joke and it aims to make you laugh. And the whole theater did!

Priyanka Chopra stuns as a swimsuit model fantasy come to life but the standout, much to my surprise, was Liam Hemsworth, who looks like he had the time of his life filming this movie. His campy, tongue and cheek performance just made the film for me.

This is a watchable comedy designed to be enjoyed again and again. My friend Sylvia came with me to the premiere and she was doubled over laughing for most of the film. We both grew up watching romantic comedies and there are a lot of hidden jokes in the movie for rom com fans.

I have a huge problem with a lot of romantic comedies and most of those problems have to do with the fact that the woman’s life is a disaster until the man shows up. Screw that! I love how Isn’t It Romantic goes another way with the story. I don’t want to spoil the ending, but I was pleasantly surprised by the climactic speech made mid-wedding by Rebel Wilson’s character. More of this, Hollywood.

On another note, I just about died laughing at the Talenti-filled freezer featured in Isn’t It Romantic. Want to make a night out of seeing the movie with your girlfriends? Go see Isn’t It Romantic (in theaters February 14) then make my Ice Cream Board (featuring, you guessed it, Talenti!) and discuss over a sundae. Get the “recipe” here.
