Everyone else’s new year’s resolution seems to be to get fit/get abs/lose weight but personally I just want to drink more wine and be happy. So far, so good! To savor wine is to savor life and that’s something that both Kuhlman Cellars and I whole-heartedly believe.

I visited Kuhlman Cellars in the rolling hills of the Texas wine country twice in 2019 and loved strolling through their estate vineyard with Toby (a very good boy). You read about the Kuhlman Cellars vineyard experience here.

Yesterday I opened a bottle of 2016 Reserve Merlot to enjoy by the fire pit with a bit of cheese (which my dog Henry very much wanted to enjoy with me). This wine was aged thirty months in French oak barrels to create a gorgeous red perfect for cold winter nights. It’s very drinkable with splendid cherry notes. It would be amazing in a sauce if you could stand to part with any!

Gruyere, you say?

The color is a lovely burnt red, almost orange in tint. Just look at the brilliant color in the glass! This wine has the most exquisite aroma. It’s so highly aromatic in fact that I found myself with my nose in the glass half the night, drinking in the sweet cherry smell. I couldn’t get enough! I wish I had a candle that smelled like this wine.

This wine would be terrific with my Chicken and Sausage Gumbo or any spicy winter dish but it’s also a great wine to enjoy by a cozy fire to truly enjoy the complexity of the robust flavor profile. I enjoyed mine with nutty gruyere, aged Irish Cheddar, spicy sausage, Havarti, beet crackers, and Marcona almonds. However you enjoy it, this Texas merlot is a palate-pleaser.

Here’s to more vineyard strolls in 2020!

Cheers,
