Vanilla Buttermilk Scones

Vanilla Buttermilk Scones

If you’ve never had my old fashioned buttermilk scones before, you’re in for a treat. I’ve been baking these for years and years and they always turn out perfect!

Vanilla Buttermilk Scones

I served these delicious scones at my Snow White Tea Party with clotted cream and raspberry jam. They really are perfect for afternoon tea!

You’re not going to think these are going to work. You’re going to be plagued with doubt. Trust the process! They look craggly. They look like they’re going ot be dry. They’re not. In fact, they stay soft and tender for days!

I hope you love these tender, delicious scones as much as my friends do! This is probably one of the most requested recipes in my personal life. All of my girlfriends constantly ask to come over for tea and scones. The best part? They’re so easy to make, I can whip them up at a moment’s notice!

Vanilla Buttermilk Scones

Makes 9-12 scones
3 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
1 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease two cookie sheets.
  2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Incorporate the butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender or spatula. Mix until well-combined. (Some lumps are okay.)
  4. Whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. (Don’t beat the mixture or your scones will be tough.) If needed, add another tablespoon or two of buttermilk just until mixture comes together.
  5. Using a 1/4-cup measuring cup, scoop dough onto two lightly greased or parchment-lined cookie sheet. (The rounds should look similar to large cookies about to go in the oven.)
  6. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until they’re golden brown. Serve warm with butter and jam.
