Rockwall Farmers Market

Rockwall Farmers Market | The Rose Table

Yesterday I went to Rockwall Farmers Market for the first time after moving to Rockwall just twelve days ago. Located on the town’s adorable historic square, I imagine strolling around the market on a Saturday morning buying vegetables from local farmers isn’t all that different than it would have been when the town was founded in 1873, except I suppose I would have ridden my horse instead of driving. Townspeople were milling about when the market opened at eight o’clock in the morning. It was already a balmy 83 degrees so I was glad I wore my wide-brimmed Wallaroo hat.

The market forms an L shape and wraps around the old courthouse. I decided to start on the far side and work my way back towards my car. I could smell the cantaloupes from across the street and made a beeline for the vendor responsible for such sweet-smelling fruit. “Which day would you like to enjoy your cantaloupe?” He asked. “Tomorrow! Sunday brunch,” I replied. He carefully selected a heavy one that would be perfectly ripe in twenty-four hours, the kind of personal touch that you only find at a farmers market. I also purchased strawberries, blueberries, and potatoes from him. I regret not getting onions. Next week!

Moving on, I gravitated toward a Greek stand. My regular readers know what an enormous fan of Greek food I am. I make tzatziki practically every week and lamb meatballs are one of my specialties. (I still need to post my recipe!) The OPA! chef explained that they’re just across the lake in Rowlett and that they make all of their dips. They were buy one, get one half off so I picked up Tzatziki and hummus.

Having stopped at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory just yesterday while at the Harbor, I passed gorgeous artisan chocolates but made a mental note to try them on a different day. I spotted a honey stand and walked over to pick some up since I’m almost out. They had honey lemonade, bee pollen, and honey in multiple sizes.

I rounded the corner after passing a coffee stand and couldn’t resist the dark chocolate almond toffee. Apparently it’s best to keep it in the freezer so even though I did just buy chocolates, I grabbed a bag of toffee to put in my freezer.

I lit up when I saw Sweet Stump’s booth selling cookies and other baked goods. I picked up a dainty loaf of poppy seed bread with orange glaze, which I later enjoyed for breakfast. The gentleman who sold me the bread was an absolute delight and was one of the most enthusiastic vendors of the morning.

Close by was a woman selling freshly baked breads from Village Baking Co. I selected sourdough (my favorite!) to freeze for later in the week.

Chelles Macarons had lemon, vanilla, pistachio, red velvet, salted caramel, strawberry cheesecake, coffee, fruity pebbles, and chocolate macaroons for sale. I was surprised by how many bakers sell their goods at Rockwall Farmers Market!

I was delighted to see fresh pasta but sadly had run out of cash and this particular vendor didn’t take cards. I am anxious to try the roasted garlic and tomato pastas. Yum!

I only stopped at a handful of vendors so there’s much yet to be explored. I can tell you that the fruit and Sweet Stump poppyseed bread absolutely hit the spot for breakfast when I got back home!

  1. […] Dreams do come true, people. I have often dreamed of strolling through a market in Provence and picking up fresh flowers for a dinner party. Never have I ever seen flowers at my local farmers market until I turned the corner last Saturday and squealed with delight. There it was: a flower stand at my very own Rockwall Farmers Market. […]
