The Mermaid is The Buccaneer Hotel’s casual beachside dining restaurant on Mermaid Beach. It’s an open air restaurant and you can opt for a table right on the beach if it strikes your fancy. The menu is a mix of Caribbean classics (conch galore!) as well as a variety of burgers, wraps, and sandwiches. The Mermaid is open seasonally for dinner, open daily for lunch, and is home to several special events, including the Monday night grillin’ and chillin’ event featuring a pyro show by CoralFire and a seasonal Crucian pig roast.

Pro tip: request a covered table closest to the beach for grillin’ and chillin’. The second and third tables from the left are the best positioned for the Pyro show.
My friend Sarah and I were very impressed by the food at The Mermaid. Our first dining experience at The Mermaid was their beachside service as we enjoyed The Buccaneer’s luxurious cabana. We ordered drinks and snacks and were blown away. Later the trip we attended the Monday night grillin’ and chillin’ event and returned for lunch and drinks. Here are a few of my favorite dishes at The Mermaid.
Conch Fritters
These are hands down the best conch fritters I’ve had. They are an absolute must. Served with arugula, you get four large fritters to an order. They’re fluffy on the inside, crunchy on the outside, filled with large chunks of conch, and fried to a deep golden brown.
Have I mentioned how much I love conch? This salad is tall with healthy veggies: red and green bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, onions, cabbage, carrots, and again, huge chunks of conch. It’s served with a balsamic vinaigrette and lime wedges. I could happily eat this daily for lunch. It’s fresh, flavorful, and swimsuit friendly – the perfect beachside lunch!
Frenched Airline Chicken Breast
I know, I know. It isn’t like me to order meat on an island but the chicken just smelled so amazing when we were walking to our table that I had to order it. At Grillin’ and Chillin’, you choose your own sauce, vegetable, and starch. I chose grilled asparagus and parmesan risotto as my sides and the citrus herb beurre blanc as my sauce and can highly recommend that pairing. Yum!
All dishes at Monday night’s grillin’ and chillin’ come with a fluffy roll and arugula salad with roasted tomatoes and mozzarella balls.
Save room for a tropical slice of cheesecake at The Mermaid! The Mango Guava Cheesecake in caramel sauce is a beautiful end to a lovely beachside meal.
The Buccaneer has a fantastic cocktail menu that’s available across the property at The Mermaid, The Lounge, and The Terrace. Since I visited The Buccaneer in August, it was quite warm and I mainly went with frozen cocktails. Here are some of my favorites I enjoyed beachside.
The Rose Table’s Favorite Drinks
Bushwacker
This tastes like a chocolate milkshake and I’m not one bit mad about it. Baileys, amaretto, and coffee liquor and blended together in this frozen dessert cocktail.
This tastes like a banana milkshake. BBC stands for Baileys, Banana, and Coconut. Sign. Me. Up.
Miami Vice
Half strawberry daiquiri, half pina colada, this drink manages to be better than the two individually. And it’s awfully pretty, don’t you think?
