Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park St. George

St. George in the Greater Zion area of Utah has so many hiking options to offer between Zion National Park and Snow Canyon but today I want to highlight Pioneer Park. I had a bad accident five years ago and have a weak leg as a result so sadly, I can’t hike like I used to. I was pleased to see that St. George has as a hiking option that isn’t too intense for those of us with bad knees.

The 52-acre community park is located right next to the Red Hills Desert Garden (read my article here) and offers great views of the city. It’s a rock climbers’ dream with loads of nooks and crannies to explore. The best part is that you don’t have to commit to a 2- or 5- or 10-mile trial.

You can wander around the rocks and explore as much or as little as you want at Pioneer Park. My friend and I visited Pioneer Park during our girls trip to The Inn at Entrada after exploring the desert garden next door.

The park has a large pavilion with picnic tables, BBQs, restrooms, water fountains, and even a fire pit with a mini amphitheater and views of the city. I can’t even imagine how fun it would be to have s’mores around that fire pit at night! The city parks are open from sunrise until 10 pm and are free to visit so take a picnic and spend the whole day at Pioneer Park if it strikes your fancy.

There are slot canyons to be uncovered and a Boy Scout cave that we happened to stumble upon. We spent about an hour and a half meandering around Pioneer Park before lunch during our trip to St. George. Even in August, the dry heat wasn’t unbearable.

Pioneer Park offers laid-back hiking for all fitness levels and is a great attraction for those like me who want the St. George hiking experience without committing to a long, strenuous hike. For more information on Pioneer Park, click here.

  2. […] What a fun place to spend a morning! The greater Zion area has an array of hiking for all experience levels. There is of course Zion National Park as well as Snow Canyon for adventurers but if you’re looking for the Utah hiking experience that’s a bit less strenuous, check out Pioneer Park next to Red Hills Desert Garden. There’s a pavilion with picnic tables, rock climbing, a fire pit, and beautiful views of St. George. It’s also free so walk up and enjoy! Read my Pioneer Park article here. […]
