It’s Wendy’s birthday today! My sweet mare is 19 years young and I’ve had her since she was just a yearling, can you believe? Where has the time gone? This has been a very exciting year for us and I thought I would recap it in honor of her birthday.
Last April we took these beautiful ballgown photos with Joshlyn Photography, whom I had so much fun with during this photoshoot, I promptly befriended. I’ve always wanted to do a ballgown shoot with Wendy and finally got around to. In fact, I might just have to do another one!
Wendy also fulfilled one of my other whimsical life goals by being part of my Sleepy Hollow party as the Headless Horseman‘s mount. She absolutely crushed it! Shoutout to my trainer Karen Singer for making this happen. It’s a lot to ask a horse to not be scared around a headless rider in a fluttering cape, spooky pumpkin head, tripod, photographer, and 18th century dress billowing in the wind but we nailed it!
In December Karen surprised me with a jingle bell carriage drive. I’m squealing just thinking about it! Who gets to do that?! For my last lesson before Christmas, she attached real sleigh bells to Wendy’s harness for the most charming drive I’ve ever had. What a delightful memory! I felt like I was in a Hallmark movie. Just a few weeks ago, I got to drive Wendy with my cart for the very first time. I bought it three years ago with hopes that someday she would drive it. It’s bigger, heavier, and louder than the zippy jog carts she’s been driving but Karen has spent a year teaching her patience and making her a much braver driving horse.
Karen completely changed the way Wendy carries herself in the cart. She got my dressage horse back! Moving to Shenanigan Stables was truly the best decision I’ve ever made in so many ways. Everyone takes such great care of us at Meadow Lane Equestrian Center!
