Quite possibly my favorite thing in the world is a deep, dark chocolate chocolate chip muffin. I always treat myself to one on vacation, which is why this recipe is part of my Vacation at Home series.
There’s just something about a rich muffin with melty chocolate chips that makes any day instantly special. One of my favorite birthdays was at Universal Orlando with my sister-in-law (read about that trip here). I opened my eyes on the morning of my birthday to see my SIL Heather waiting anxiously for me to get up so she could exclaim, “Happy birthday!” as she thrust a cinnamon dolce latte and chocolate chocolate chip muffin at me. She knows me so well – those are two of my favorite things on the planet!
My favorite chocolate chocolate chip muffin I ever had was at Disneyland. I didn’t shut up about it for years. On our next family vacation to the park, I couldn’t remember which bakery in Disneyland had that magical chocolate chocolate chip muffins so I dragged my poor family to four – FOUR! – different bakeries in the park, purchasing muffins at each before I found my holy grail muffin at the Blue Ribbon Bakery, which has sadly been closed for some years now. Luckily I’ve recreated that magical muffin for you!
These chocolate chocolate chip muffins are incredibly fluffy, moist, and chocolate-y. The texture is perfect. I always use dark cocoa powder for baking because I’m a dark chocolate lover. This recipe makes 18 muffins – the perfect amount if you want to freeze some for later!

Makes 18
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2/3 cup full-fat sour cream
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup Hershey’s Special Dark Cocoa Powder
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line 18 muffin cups with cupcake liners.
- In a large bowl, whisk together milk, vegetable oil, and sugar until sugar is mostly dissolved. Add eggs, vanilla extract, and sour cream and whisk until combined.
- In a small bowl, sift together flour, dark cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together and gently stir into wet ingredients, stirring just until combined. Add chocolate chips and spoon evenly into 18 muffin cups.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean. Remove from pans and cool completely.
