I had a spectacular evening with Lyric Stage, which impressive considering what a bad mood I was in today. I’m a new woman after some bourbon and two hours of Disney music! Disney’s Tarzan is this weekend only at the historic Majestic Theatre and it’s not to be missed. It’s my favorite Lyric Stage show yet!

My bestie Irene and I parked at the Majestic early (my favorite move) and walked over to Toussaint Dallas, which is conveniently right next door. I got a fabulous old fashioned with Woodford Reserve and Irene got a delightful Deep Blue Something cocktail with gin, lime, and rosemary, with a purple butterfly pea powder ice cube that had us absolutely bewitched.
We then rushed over to the theater, which was a packed house! The incomparable Catherine Carpenter Cox had me bawling as Kala five minutes into the show. She poured her heart and soul into her tender performance and pretty much made me cry every time she was on stage.

The crowd collectively gasped when young Tarzan hopped over a rock and suddenly adult Tarzan, magnificently played by Esteban Vilchez, swung on stage. What an entrance! I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the original Broadway Tarzan in the role and let me tell you, nothing compares to Vilchez’ Tarzan. Everyone around us was whispering how incredible he is in the role.

Mira Are lit up the stage as Jane. I have to assume she’s a real life Disney princess. She perfectly embodied the role, nailing the comedic and vocal nuances that only true Disney fans would appreciate. Keith J. Warren gives a booming performance as villain Clayton and Antavius Draughn steals every scene he’s in.

And P.S. Why yes, my mom has been hounding me to do a Tarzan episode of The Rose Table for years. Should that be Disney Dinners #24? See all of my Disney parties here.
