Many locals around Saint Croix told me that 1756 Grotto has the best courtyard dining on the island and y’all know I’m a sucker for a fabulous courtyard. Plus, I loved practically every word on the menu so I immediately booked a table for dinner al fresco.

We were greeted with a taste of Caribbean history: the aptly named restaurant is located in a historic building on what is quite possibly the cutest street in Christiansted. (Pro tip: arrive to town early enough to walk along the boardwalk one street over before dinner!)

The courtyard itself is incredibly chic, with lush landscaping, giant palm fronds, Veuve Clicquot bistro tables, and chickens roaming around the patio. 

Appetizers & Drinks

I ordered the Pineapple Fizz cocktail, which I was told is one of their most popular drinks. It’s light and refreshing and went perfectly with our appetizer. Conch Two Ways includes both conch fritters and conch ceviche served with toast. I truly can’t get enough conch when I’m in the Caribbean so I was delighted with this dish! 

Main Course

I really stewed about what to order but finally settled on the Catch of the Day: lightly fried flounder with a Creole stuffing and spicy tomato sauce. This dish was a 10/10 for a seafood lover! I was absolutely swooning. Irene ordered another special, the oxtail, and was delighted with the grilled cornbread.

Save Room For Dessert

For dessert, we split the Plantains Foster with coconut ice cream and bread pudding. I mean, how could this be anything other than delicious!? If you love bread pudding and caramel, you will absolutely love this dish. I have to start serving ice cream with toasted coconut at home immediately!
