Horseshoe Cheese Ball

Horseshoe Cheese Ball

Have you ever seen anything cuter for a Kentucky Derby party than this Horseshoe Cheese ball!? I’m so proud of this easy appetizer!

This incredible Horseshoe Cheese Ball is made out of cream cheese, chive and onion cream cheese, shredded white cheddar, and edible silver leaf. It’s perfect for any equestrian-themed event.

Can you eat edible silver leaf?

Yes, but obviously it has to be edible silver leaf. Do not accidentally buy silver leaf for crafting! Make sure it’s food grade and labeled as edible. This is the same stuff bakers use on cakes. I get mine from Barnabas Blattgold, the same company I’ve purchased edible gold from on Amazon. You can get it from affiliate link here.

What does edible silver taste like?

Nothing! It has no taste and no texture. For everyone saying “their teeth hurt” looking at the picture because it looks like foil, let me repeat it: edible silver has no texture nor taste. It’s purely for looks. This tastes like a normal cheese ball! If you closed your eyes, you wouldn’t even know it’s there.

Can you make this without silver?

Absolutely! Be me guest! It still looked quite adorable before I covered it foil just as a horseshoe-shaped cheese ball. I only chose to cover it in edible silver for my Derby party because horseshoes are of course silver, but you could absolutely still make this delicious white cheddar cheese ball without it.

Horseshoe Cheese Ball

2 8-oz blocks white cheddar cheese
1 8-oz package cream cheese, at room temperature
1 8-oz container chive and onion cream cheese
Edible silver leaf sheets

  1. Grate cheddar cheese. Combine with cream cheese, and chive and onion cream cheese until well blended. I don’t even use a mixer; you can easily do it with a wooden spoon!
  2. Shape into a horseshoe shape and set on a serving platter.
  3. Gently lift one piece of paper with silver leaf on it and carefully press it onto the cheeseball, discarding the paper backing. Repeat with remaining silver until cheeseball is covered. Chill until ready to eat. Serve with crackers!
